Having a Personal Trainer for Work - What Coaching Did for me
I’ve been in your shoes.
I've sat through time management workshops, struggling to apply the theories discussed to my specific challenges as a Product Manager. I walked away with a framework that I was supposed to apply, but I struggled to find value in it. I knew that I was supposed to prioritize impact-making, but also believed that “if it is to be, it’s up to me”. The framework didn’t help me focus on the most impactful tasks. I was left feeling stuck.
Luckily, I found a great mentor and coach, who spent focused one-on-one time with me weekly to help me identify time management challenges and understand the root cause—all specific to my situation. We explored my principles and beliefs, and The Why behind them. Additionally, I had someone who held me accountable for action items, answered questions that came up during the week, and gave me encouragement. Through these sessions, I saw much-needed progress and learned about myself. The coaching also created space for me to think about the next steps in my career, which I previously thought I had no time to plan.
Similarities between working with a personal trainer and a product coach
After recently having a child, I worked with a personal trainer to rebuild my strength. The differences this brought about were far beyond anything I would have been able to accomplish through exercising on my own. I was struck by the similarities between working with a personal trainer and a product coach:
You work with someone to identify the problem and develop a targeted solution just for you.
You have permission to be your most authentic self.
You get focused time to make sure you are using the right muscles; no more wasted time.
You receive encouragement when you would have given up.
You have a trusted expert in your corner to push you and challenge you.
You get accountability to help you be the best self you want to be.
You receive help to better manage risks (whether that's avoiding injuries, or common pitfalls and mistakes in product management).
You end up with better performance and achieve your goal. Along the way, you learn more about yourself and discover your potential.
You gain a friend invested in your long-term success and fulfillment.
